Every December the same thing happens: factories across the Midlands switch off for the Christmas shutdown, and every machine shop within fifty miles fills up at once. The maintenance work that waited all year suddenly has a two week window, and the firms that booked in October get it done. This is your October reminder.
Why the shutdown window matters
Most plant repairs compete with production. The gearbox that whines, the slide that sticks, the conveyor that needs a day of strip-down: none of it justifies stopping a working line in March. The Christmas shutdown is the one fortnight when the machines are cold anyway, which makes it the cheapest downtime of the year. The catch is that everyone else has the same idea.
What to book now
- Strip-down repairs and refurbishments. Gearbox rebuilds, cylinder reseals, slideway work, anything that needs the machine in pieces for days. Booked now, the repair work is scheduled, the parts are on the shelf, and the job starts the day you switch off.
- Remakes of worn parts. If a part needs machining from a sample, send the sample in November, not on the 23rd of December. Measuring, material and machining all take calendar time, and so do we over Christmas lunch.
- Guarding, barriers and steelwork. Shutdowns are when fabrication work gets fitted: new guarding, walkways, repairs to structures that are normally surrounded by production.
- Spares and consumables. Carriers wind down before the holidays. Bearings, belts, seals and consumables for the January restart should be on your shelf by mid December, not in a depot somewhere on the 27th.
Walk the line in November
The cheapest survey you will ever commission: walk the plant with a notepad while it runs, and write down everything that rattles, weeps, whines or needs two goes to start. That list is your shutdown work order. Send it to us and we will tell you what is a repair, what is a remake, what is a shelf part, and what order to tackle it in.
The bit that does not shut down
Our 24/7 breakdown callout does not take Christmas off. If something lets go on Boxing Day with a January order book waiting, the phone still answers. But we would rather see the problem in November, and so would you.
